The Opalescence Process

First, we’ll completely cover your lips and gums to ensure that only your teeth are exposed to the whitening solution. Next, the Opalescence Boost whitener, a chemically activated gel, will be applied. Because the powerful 40% hydrogen peroxide gel is chemically activated, it doesn’t require a hot, uncomfortable light to work.

While most patients report the process to be pain-free, some may notice tooth sensitivity for a few hours post-treatment. If you do experience tooth sensitivity, there are ways to treat it using desensitising toothpastes and gels such as Opalescence™ Whitening Toothpaste Sensitivity Relief.

Take-Home Kits

Did you know that you can whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home? The team at Blockhouse Bay Dental offers convenient and effective teeth whitening options including take-home kits. We will provide clear instructions and guidance on how to use the take-home kit to maximise your result. The process involves taking an impression of your teeth which will allow us to create your set of trays for you to wear only 60 minutes a day! We recommend over a course of two weeks for you to conduct the teeth whitening treatment in your own home, for you to notice your best result.

How bright do you want to go? Opalescence Go is available in 10% hydrogen peroxide (wear 30-60 minutes for 5-10 days) and 15% hydrogen peroxide (wear 15-20 minutes for 5-10 days). Many patients opt for Opalescence Go, as it’s fast, simple, and incredibly effective. You can use this whitening system on its own or as a follow-up to in-chair whitening.

What is involved in having teeth whitening done?

If you’re having your whitening process completed at our practice, you’ll have a single appointment and see your results instantly. If you choose to do it at home, we’ll take impressions of your mouth and create customised trays. You’ll apply the whitening agent to them and wear the trays for 30 minutes, twice a day. In 3-4 days, you’ll start noticing a difference, with your final results occurring 10-14 days afterwards.

Is it safe to whiten teeth?

Consumer trials and extensive research back that professional teeth whitening systems are safe. We do not advise you to whiten your teeth if you’re pregnant. About 1 out of 10 people feel that their teeth are sensitive to cold during the procedure, but it is only temporary. If you have experienced sensitive teeth, let us know beforehand so that we can make a change to the procedure and give you a desensitising agent.

How long does teeth whitening last?

You’ll see the whiteness you’ve achieved fading after 2-3 years. You can top up your results easily with your original trays and remaining bleaching material, as it has a shelf life of about four years.

Will teeth whitening work for me?

Some deep discolouration in the enamel may not change during the whitening process. Your old fillings and porcelain restorations can’t whiten. When we assess you, we’ll advise you on whether you’re a candidate and the results you can expect to achieve.
