What Is It?

*Source: EMS

EMS AIRFLOW is an advanced, non-contact type of dental maintenance and prevention. It discharges a controlled stream of air, warm water and superfine powder onto the tooth. It also focuses on those hard-to-reach areas to dislodge and remove food particles, plaque, discolouration and stains.

What Are Some Benefits?

Here are some fantastic reasons why we chose to offer EMS AIRFLOW:

  • It uses a high-pressure water/air stream to quickly, efficiently and comfortably clean your teeth.
  • For added comfort, we have the ability to adjust the temperature on the AIRFLOW. This feature is particularly attractive for children or patients with sensitivity.
  • There is much less, if any scraping, discomfort or unpleasant taste after treatment.

Did you know that approximately 1mm of dental plaque contains over 200 million bacteria? If left untreated, the bacteria can increase and develop a biofilm. Biofilm is a collection of bacteria that can produce gum disease and compromise your body’s immune defences. When utilising the AIRFLOW Prophylaxis Master device, your dentist or dental therapist will place a coloured dye onto your teeth to reveal any plaque and biofilm that’s present in your mouth. This tool can help to foster thorough oral hygiene. That’s because it exposes the areas in your mouth that you need to spend some more time cleaning at home. Next, your dentist or oral therapist will use the AIRFLOW to eliminate plaque buildup. This crucial action can help to prevent and treat gingivitis (gum disease) and periodontitis.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the system detect plaque?

Your dentist or hygienist will first have you rinse your mouth with mouthwash and then will apply a coloured dye to your teeth to easily see where plaque is present so we can remove it. Your teeth will be cleaned thoroughly leaving you with a sparkling smile.

Does the EMS AIRFLOW system treat gingivitis?

It can help remove plaque buildup that can lead to gum conditions such as gingivitis. If we determine that you have severe gum disease, we may recommend a deep clean.

Can this system remove tartar?

If your teeth are covered in tartar or hard calculus, it may be necessary to utilise an additional ultrasonic system on your teeth. Thanks to the AIRFLOW system’s power, the time needed for the ultrasonic system is significantly reduced.

Can the system be used if I wear metal braces or have other cosmetic work such as crowns, veneers, or implants?

Yes, because EMS AIRFLOW is gentle it won’t affect any permanent dental work like crowns or veneers or temporary work such as metal braces.

Does it cost more?

Owing to the additional costs of disposable items used in the procedure, it does cost on average $20-30 more per session).
